Babel Film Workshop Student Films Win Awards at a Kinex Film Festival in Hong Kong
Babel Film Workshop students at the Kinex Film Festival
Three films created by students at Babel Film Workshop were selected for the Kinex Film Festival hosted at the Eaton Hotel in Hong Kong, with two receiving awards. The films were produced through the Babel Film Workshop’s Short Film Lab, an advanced filmmaking program for students aged 14 to 18. The program guides participants through the creation of an original short film following professional industry standards.

“A Piece of Cake” (2025) — Audience Choice Award
A teen mystery about a young baker who investigates party guests after the birthday girl has an allergic reaction to his cake.
“Crushing” (2024) — Best First-Time Filmmaker Award
A coming-of-age story set in Hong Kong about meeting an online friend for the first time, exploring social anxiety and LGBTQ+ themes.
“Oranda” (2024) — Official Selection
A horror short about a grounded teen whose hunger spirals into a shocking choice involving a pet goldfish.

Post-screening Q&A sessions for “Crushing” and “A Piece of Cake” provided the audience opportunities to engage with the student filmmakers. Director Ema Poposka discussed the making of “Crushing,” while Director Andie Ngai and Editor Rachell Lee presented details on “A Piece of Cake’s” production process.

Kinex Film Festival collaborated with Diversity Hub and Be/longing to organize this event, which serves as a platform for emerging filmmakers in Hong Kong.
