Film Stylo
Step 5 of 5
Editing
Now that you're done filming and recording your voice-over, it's time to begin post-production, and edit your film together. You can use an editing software of your choice, or download one below. There are many free tutorials on YouTube if you are new to these software.
Software Download
- iMovie (Mac)
- HitFilm Express
(Mac and PC)
Editing Instructions
- Connect your phone or camera to your computer
- Open your editing software and start a new project
- Import all recorded footage and voice-over (under File menu)
- Drag your clips into your editing timeline according to their order in your storyboard
- Remove or lower all audio recorded in your video footage
- Drag your voice-over narration into the timeline
- Trim your clips according to your storyboard
- Add a title card at the beginning that indicates your selected prompt
- Add a "Written and Directed by" credit at the end that includes your first name and last name initials
- Lastly, download and add the Film Stylo end title card to the last 3 seconds of your film
- Export your film (checklist below)
Refer to your storyboard as a guide to when each clip should begin and end. You can play around with the flow of your voice-over and the clips. The cuts do not have to match the beginning or end of each sentence chunk perfectly.
Soundtrack
If you wish, you can add a royalty-free soundtrack to your film. When in doubt about whether or not you have the rights to use a sound piece, we recommend recording your own soundtrack for your film. This can be natural sounds you hear in your home.
Since the focus will be on your voice-over narration, however, make sure that any additional soundtrack doesn't distract the viewer from what you're saying.
Before you export
Make sure that:
- The beginning title and end credit (including the Film Stylo end title card) are in place
- You can hear your voice-over narration clearly
- You export at high-resolution settings (instructions here for iMovie and HitFilm Express)
Submit your film
Rename your exported file to include your full name. Then, upload it here and send it to filmstylo@gmail.com or include the download URL in your email reply. If you are in a class, submit your film via Google Classroom or upload it in your Drive folder (make sure it is under 500mb).
